Powerpoint Person?

Just moments ago, our Vice President for South Asia (or simply the boss of my boss), called me in the room and said "From now on, I shall send you all my reports. You have done a wonderful job with the presentations. You are our South Asia Powerpoint person."

Ha. What an odd designation to assign me with. But I'm not complaining at all. It gives me quite a giggly thud in the heart. With a decade of constant learning and practice of Microsoft Powerpoint, it should naturally pay off well. Also, the new features of the 2007 version can make your presentations look beyond professional.

Idioms and the English Language

For the last couple of months, I have been planning to visit Fully Booked or Powerbooks and catch a new edition of Kate Turabian's writers' guide. As a regular in the web logging world, I think that every writer should be responsible enough to use proper English and correct grammar. I know, though, that online diaries and journals speak the kind of language its authors want. Still, I speak for myself when I say I strive not to butcher the universal language. In fact, it takes me about five times to go over my posts before I could publish them. And it always works for me.

On the other hand, I also wanted to get updated on idioms which I think can help me to embellish my posts right here.

Idioms are figurative statements often used in American literature that produce flamboyance in the written work. An exercise of the use of idioms can be enriching as it provides me as a frustrated writer with the ability to expound on things discussed as flourishing as possible.

Idioms like "in the neck of the woods" (nearby or around the area), "cut to the chase" (go direct to the point), "at the eleventh hour" (at the last minute or too late), and "blow one's top" (be very angry) have all been used in many literary pieces. I have yet to discover and read about the endless idioms that the English language gave birth to.

There are also other interesting forms that we use to change the way we describe and talk of things. Think figures of speech such as simile, personification, metaphors.

Truly, the English language is never as easy as pie, but it should serve as our armor as budding writers until we are all over the hills. The success of our stories will depend on the way we can best put out and arrange the flowers in our garden.

What's in a Satchel?

I stopped by Nine West Online and saw the the most ideal bag for me, size-wise, design-wise, and functionality-wise (in no particular order that is).

This model is the Uniquely Yours Croc Satchel, $69.00.

What I basically look for in a bag are the following:

1. Color. I normally prefer black as it is safe and never hard to have to pair with.
2. Size. It matters if there is room in your bag for movement.
3. Built. Sturdy is the name. I prefer the bottom of the bag to be hard.
4. Design. I prefer zippered outside and inside pockets. I like a single, medium-wide handle.
5. Material. There is always something in crocodile leather that gets me everytime.

A sneak peek: what's in my bag?

Clockwise from the top: hand sanitizer, baby wipes, my toiletries and make-up kit, comb, important keys, mobile phone in a red leather case, and my leather wallet. These are the things I can't do without every single day.

Ain't the satchel perfect for me??

Pantene's Most Beautiful

Pantene Shampoo has unveiled the newest crop of who's "hailed beautiful".

Can you speak your mind and tell me who you think deserves to be hailed most beautiful??

Busy

Over the weekend, I was supposed to do a million things of chores and errands but time did not allow me to accomplish them. I engaged in doing a little exercise in the morning of Saturday by loading Hip Hop Abs on the player. I was glad to see Shaun T back on my television screen. After 45 minutes though, I was so done and tired. Sunday came and the clan at my mother's side headed for a little swimming slash bonding time away from Manila.

In between those events, I found myself lounging in front of the television doing some cuddly time with my baby. So even if there are some things left undone in the errands department, the thing is I get to spend quality time with my son. I slacked this weekend, I know, but there were really great movies I couldn't put down.

I am planning to hold another garage sale as I received loads of clothes from Tita Baby last week. Now I need to re-arrange the closet and do some spring cleaning! As early as now I am mentally forming a list of tasks in the next few weeks and months.

I know my doctors' appointments have been so long overdue. I will have to bring my son back to his pediatrician before his birthday which will be another event to prepare for. I will also be attending two weddings in June and this means I will have to get my ensemble ready for these occasions and buy wedding gifts.

Now. Let's take it one day at a time shall we? And all shall be done.

Kris Aquino's Latest Endorsement

I haven't recovered yet from the distasteful commercial of Casino Rubbing Alcohol with Kris in it. She looked like Medusa with that hairdo. And her facial expression was scary as usual.

Just moments ago, I read in the news that she's endorsing this???

Now Kris, seriously?? This is not how you make your career flourish.

I Love Ellen

Born in January 26, 1958 in Louisiana, Ellen Lee Degeneres started as a stand-up comedian in bars and coffeehouses in the 1980s. Her first television appearance was in the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1986. The Ellen Show was aired from 1994-1998. It was in February 1997 that she admitted to Oprah about her homosexuality through her sitcom.

Now she does not look like 50 golden years old here.

The Ellen Degeneres Show

The Ellen Degeneres Show was reformatted as a talk show in 2003. The show starts with the point of view from the audience leading the cameras to the stage. The curtains roll up and Ellen emerges greeting the energetic audience with her ear to ear smiles. As the cheers subside, she proceeds with delivering her most well-written monologues and the suave moves only Ellen can strut out.

Perhaps Ellen has made interviews with almost all the celebrities in America and elsewhere. The unforgettable ones that I can recall now are with Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Wanda Sykes, John Travolta, Patrick Dempsey, Leah Remini, Nicolette Sheridan, Alison Janney, Ryan Seacrest, Taye Diggs, Kate Walsh, Donald Trump, and even Tiger Woods.

In her show also, live performances are done by artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Maroon 5, James Blunt, and John Legend. Audience participation is always present in Ellen's things to do while airing the show live.

The Ellen Degeneres Show may be the most well-rounded talk show in America for me. Somehow it does not strike me at all as dramatic as Oprah can sometimes be. What is common between the two hosts is that they give away prizes which carry a range from the most practical and simple to the rock star kind, the kind which really leaves me drooling. Think iPods, Tivos, Wiis, other techie and savvy gadgets, to very ostentatious liner cruises which the contestants can win through simply played games of trivia and knowledge.

Her Achievements

She lent her voice to Dory in the 2003 hit Finding Nemo. She is the author of My Point Is...And I Do Have One in 1995, and The Funny Thing Is...in 2003. In 2004, she made an ad campaign for American Express that won an advertising award.

Ellen is a comedian, a writer, a talented host, and an actor. She has won about 18 awards as talk show host from the Daytime Emmys and People's Choice. She relished the honor of hosting the 79th Academy Awards and she was awesome in undertaking this privilege.

Ellen Degeneres is a gifted individual and I idolize her. Since 2004 when I gave birth to my son, I've always gone home early, eagerly anticipating, as dinner time was Ellen time. She could easily make me look like a crazy person, watching by myself and laughing my heart out at her amusing stories. She discusses relevant topics such as world disasters, interesting people with impeccable talent, lifestyles of actors and actresses, and animals of course. She is most passionate and at her element always when it came to animals.

The other night I chanced upon Last Comic Standing and I thought that the contenders may someday be like Ellen Degeneres. But in an instant I reckon it not being possible. Ellen is like no other.

Carly Smithson

Another great potential artist who can cut in on David Cook. Her performance sure gave me goosebumps.

Carly Smithson sings Jesus Christ Superstar during American Idol's Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber Week.

Goodbye LJ

I officially bid goodbye to LiveJournal. I got too stressed that they unfortunately did not have complete features to utilize when it came to uploading photos and embedding YouTube videos.

I'm now back at Blogger. Transferring my posts here was tedious but I was in a bit of a conundrum. And this is my online journal. I don't want to lose whatever I've written.

So we'll see from here.

Mochi

A former associate here at USW dropped by this afternoon after two years of a study grant in Japan.

She brought us a Japanese delicacy called Mochi.

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake pounded and molded into different shapes. These are stuffed with sweet filling, often with strawberry or red bean paste.

A mochitsuki meaning making mochi is a rice pounding celebration done every end of the year.

E=mc2

E=mc2 is Mariah Carey's 11th album to-date. All the songs were written and produced by this American pop and R&B artist. I am a huge fan!

I got the chance to listen to all the songs over at Amazon, and I'd say my favorite is Bye Bye.

Put your hands together for The Diva.

The Pursuit of Happyness

After watching Derailed, I switched to HBO. I submitted to seeing The Pursuit of Happyness for the first time. The film is a story of Chris Gardner, his dream of becoming a successful stockbroker, his hardships, and the struggles he went through while taking custody of his son Christopher.

Many emotions surrounded the movie. Chris, as he narrates throughout, explained that the key to happiness is always the pursuit of it. Certainly very true and very obvious. The scenes where they were evicted from their home, slept in a public comfort room, fell in line in a charity home just to have shelter for the night for his son, really touched my heart. Chris' conviction to make a decent and bright future for him and his son was the paramount highlight of the movie.

If you are one of the fortunate many who has known the story of Chris Gardner, here is the ending of the movie that brought me to tears. This I think is the most wonderful emotion ever drawn by this true story.

Directed by Gabriele Muccino, Will Smith plays Chris, Jaden Smith as Christopher, Thandie Newton as Linda, and Brian Howe as Jay Twistle.

Derailed

Last Sunday night, as soon as Ron and Uno went to bed, I finally found the time to watch television in peace. Hehe.

I reckon HBO and Star Movies are improving these days. They feature more blockbuster films than ever. And so when I jumped to these channels, I luckily caught the beginning of a Jennifer Aniston-Clive Owen starrer on Star Movies. The film is entitled Derailed.

Derailed is a suspense drama that tackled the life of Charles Schine (Clive Owen), a devoted family man who works as a writer for commercials. He and his wife Deanna are able to answer for their diabetic daughter's needs because Charles earns good money from his work.

His normal life begins to be shattered when he meets Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston) in the train one day, they meet and dine a couple of times, and they fall in love apparently. One night, while in a hotel room, a guy put a gun in their fates and the real twist begins.

I liked the suspense-filled plot of the movie. Charles' guilt and remorse led him to get his money back for the sake of his family. In the end after all, it's always the truth that wins, and the good guy who prevails.

Here's the trailer of the movie Derailed.

The movie is directed by Mikael HƄfstrƶm. Also stars Vincent Cassel (LaRoche), Melissa George (Deanna Schine), and Addison Timlin (Amy Schine).

David Cook

April 18, 2008

Have you seen him perform Our Lady Peace's song "Innocent" during Hollywood's Inspiration Week?

Have you heard his rearranged version of Mariah Carey's song "Always Be My Baby"?

He has never gotten into the bottom three ever since Idol started. I may never have a third eye or something like that, but I feel as if he is it.

David Cook may just be the 7th American Idol.

Almanacs

April 17, 2008

The other day I was browsing through the new titles in National Bookstore when I saw 2008 almanacs. It's been a long time since I last bought an almanac.

Almanacs always give me a sense of awareness with the world I am part of. It updates us about achievements and awards in the field of medicine, sports, entertainment, politics and science. It is practically an entire set of Encyclopedia Britannica incorporated into one fast-find concise source. Many more topics are featured in an almanac such as trivia on people, world records, events, facts and figures for every nation in the world, its religion and culture.

Moreover, the thing I like most about almanacs is the maps. When I was in elementary, my siblings and I used to memorize the capitals of the world. My mother bought a big globe display in the living room then which looks exactly like this.

That said, the almanac still remains to be the fastest way through world facts and figures.

Legendary Moleskine Notebook

April 15, 2008

I was at Bibliarch yesterday to buy a Moleskine notebook.

So what may be so special about this notebook?

"Moleskine is the heir of the legendary notebook used for the past two centuries by great artists and thinkers, including Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway. This trusty, pocket-sized travel companion held their sketches, notes, stories, and ideas before they became famous images or beloved books. In 1998 the little black notebook, with its typical rounded corners, elastic closure, and expandable inner pocket, was produced by a publisher from Milan under the name "Moleskine".

"Today, Moleskine® is a brand identifying a family of notebooks, journals, planners, and guidebooks, with different functions, complying with a free mindstyle, both basic and emotional, and connected with the digital world through a huge network of websites, blogs, groups, virtual archives in the Internet." (www.moleskine.com)

This is another product we use today that has a historic tale to tell.

More than anything else, errands, tasks, and priorities are always crucial for a mom like me. Ergo, this notebook. I like writing down reminders more than storing them in my mobile phone.

Talk about primitivism. This Moleskine may just be the right fit for me.

Anatomy of A Scene in Seattle Grace

April 15, 2008

In Seattle Grace Hospital, the events that take place often constitute despair, longing and heartbreak. Of the four seasons of the television series, the second is my favorite. It was a season of forming friendships, surviving relationships and interesting medical cases.

Yesterday, I went through all 27 episodes and captured the highlights of season two. While reviewing them, I noticed that there were five different places in the hospital where the most captivating scenes took place.

Number one. The exam room. We all know the famous scene at the prom where Derek was chasing Meredith and they end up in the exam room, nagging each other and then leading to the heart-tickling reunion capping the season finale.

Number two. The locker room. This common place for interns have subjected Meredith, Cristina, George, Izzie and Alex to several tests of their friendship. But they get to patch things up anyway in the locker room.

Number three. The stairs. Conversations in the stairways have usually been about the secrets of the interns. Here the secret relationship of Burke and Cristina was surreptitiously known by George when Chief Webber made him eavesdrop on things happening in the hospital.

George even fell from the stairs when everyone knew that Meredith slept with him. Poor George.

Number four. The linen room. Remember the scene where Meredith expressed her fear of the thought of her mother dying alone? Derek once again followed her in the linen room and gave her comfort when she needed it most.

And number five. The elevator. Only if these elevators could speak, they have so many wonderful tales to tell.

The happy Meredith and Derek also shared light moments here. But most often, both of them can turn depressed and exhausted over a big factor which is Addison who is clearly in the way of their love for each other.

How a particular scene in Grey's Anatomy is made is carefully thought of by Shonda Rhimes and her team of talented writers. That is for sure. They know which scene to be shot in any one of the memorable places in Seattle Grace.

It is always refreshing to go back to these memorable episodes of Season 2. Browsing through the storylines actually prepare me for the continuation of Season 4.

Cool is Nike

April 14, 2008

My brother told me that there's a new ad featuring Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Ferderer and Maria Sharapova with no less than Manny Pacquiao.

See how cool the ad is.

Happy 2 years to me!

April 11, 2008

It is my second year anniversary at USW! Hooray!

Spending anniversaries related to work give me a different high. You wonder for a second that it is a feat in itself for your personal growth and success. It is very different when it's a wedding anniversary. Years of growth in a company make an associate more valuable and mature as an individual.

And so today, Mike surprised me indeed with a celebration of sorts. What can I say, I'm one lucky gal.

Thanks to our major sponsor Yellow Cab Pizza!

On one hand, my boss should feel lucky as well. He knows who he should keep in his army. Hehe.

Haunted by this song

April 10, 2008

The first time I heard this song was on Season 2 of Grey's Anatomy, a scene where Mark Sloan was talking to Meredith Grey about the impossibility of an on-again relationship with Derek Shepherd.

And then in 27 Dresses, this song was used in the scene where Jane chases after Kevin and they dance in a wedding party by the pier, which eventually leads to their own wedding ceremony.

Now I feel like being haunted by this song. I absolutely am falling in love with this over and over.

Here's Corinne Bailey Rae performing the acoustic version of Like A Star.

New Seven Wonders

April 9, 2008

This post will be about the new seven wonders of the world.

In July 2007, the New7Wonders Foundation released an official list of the world's top human-built wonders in an event held in Lisbon, Portugal.

The new seven wonders of the world are:

The Great Wall of China - a series of stone walls built by successive dynasties against invasions;

Petra in Jordan - a picturesque site in Arabah, Jordan;

Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer - a symbol of Christianity, stands 130 feet tall;

Peru's Machu Picchu - a symbol of the Inca Empire built with polished dry-stone walls;

Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid - an archeological site built during the Maya civilization;

The Colosseum - an elliptical ampitheater in Rome, Italy; and

India's Taj Mahal - a mausoleum built in memory of Shah Jahan's wife Mumtaz Mahal.

This year, the foundation invites everyone to vote for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. As of this writing, the Philippines' bet is up at the 8th spot.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol boasts of perfectly-shaped cone hills mostly of the same size that turn brown during the dry season. Until now, no geologist has arrived at an explanation for such land formations.

I believe every wonder of the world has a certain significance or mystery to it.

Case in point: the great Stongehenge in England.

No one knows for sure how this stunner was built. Did the people of the 1800 BC civilization ever use carriages, chairs or the like? How were they able to carry the big boulders and form such a monument? How did they move the stones? Did they use huge ropes for this?

These unanswered questions make up for the very reason why they turn out to be marvels of our historic past.

Go to www.new7wonders.com to vote for the new wonders of nature.

Manila Heat Wave

April 8, 2008

CNN.com says today's temperature in Manila is 33 degrees celsius but feels like it's 40! Humidity to the extreme and with nary a hint of rainfall to boot, what must one do under the scorching heat of the sun?

You can maybe choose from an ice-cold Coke, fruit shake, ice cream, or just plain water with lots of ice!

I can't even imagine myself wearing this outfit in the hot and humid climate of India. Good gracious no. Temperatures in Mecca reach up to 40 and maybe feels like it too. Now that's too toxic don't you think?

Enchanted

I enjoyed watching Enchanted! Because Patrick Dempsey is in this movie, I picked this one out of all the "have yet to see movies" at home. But I was not disappointed at all. Loved it!

My son watched with me yesterday morning. The songs were fresh but with a touch of Beauty and The Beast to it. He swung his head to the songs especially when Giselle hummed to invite the mice, roaches, and doves which eventually led to singing the Happy Working Song.

Must watch again!

I think it was the combination of animated and real world that made the movie captivating not only to the young but young at heart. Well done once more, Disney!

This is my first time to see Amy Adams as the main character much less sing like a Broadway star. She is good. I've only seen her in Catch Me If You Can in a cameo role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Enchanted stars Amy Adams (Giselle), Patrick Dempsey (Robert), James Marsden (Prince Edward), and Susan Sarandon (Queen Narissa).

Skype and Facebook

April 2, 2008

A couple of months ago Rica invited me to join Facebook. I asked her what the difference was between Friendster and Facebook and if it was just another networking site, I'd rather stick with Friendster. It turns out that Facebook is beyond simple but fun.

As I started to scramble and work my way in Facebook, I thought the real strategy here to create a nice homepage is to embellish it with applications, yes, the neverending add this application, send this to friends and challenge them, add and send gifts application, and so on and so forth. It's entirely a vicious world around this social networking utility.

It was it the news recently that Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook is indeed the the world's youngest US billionaire. Zuckerberg is only 23 years old.

Skype, on the other hand, is a web tool used for text, voice and video chat. My sister who just relocated to the US said this is where we can communicate better and more frequently. Real thanks to technology. So after installing this app, I tested the video chat with her and I'm glad it works!

The comeback and the decolletage

April 2, 2008

What I caught on television last Sunday afternoon were interesting showbiz stories.

In The Buzz, Boy Abunda interviewed Gabby Concepcion from the Filmfest Scam fame of 1995. Yes, he finally came back to the Philippines to do movies after 13 years of hiatus in the United States.

He's still the same good looking guy we all loved back in the Gabby-Sharon days, except a little less appealing now since he's aged and it was pretty obvious.

Meanwhile, in Showbiz Central, it was a tete a tete interview of Pia Guanio with Dina Bonnevie. Pia is the current girlfriend of Vic Sotto, Dina's ex-husband.

Dina was her usual graceful self. She was as poised as her decolletage!

Earth Hour

April 1, 2008

This other news bit is not to be missed.

Last March 29 the Philippines participated in the Earth Hour.

Organized to contribute to the preservation of our environment and the battle against global warming, the entire Metro Manila and the rest of the country turned off lights for an hour.

This is one true test of solidarity among Filipinos. Many companies and establishments joined this project as well making it an overwhelming success.

According to the Worldwide Fund for Nature, about 56 megawatt hours (MWh) were conserved by a million Filipinos in 50 cities and towns nationwide as recorded with Meralco.

More Islams than Catholics now

April 1, 2008

According to a Vatican newspaper, Islams now account for 19.2 percent of the world population, while Catholics account for 17.4 percent. The data given was based on 2006, with the Vatican vouching for its data, while data on Muslims came from the United Nations.

Islam has now officially surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion.

Kitchen Rock Star

March 30, 2008

Yesterday I went to the supermarket and planned to cook chicken stroganoff. I got the recipe from my brother. What I did was saute garlic and onions, pour in chicken, cream of mushroom, and crushed tomatoes, season with salt, pepper and a bit of sugar, then let it boil. Cooking time was about 30 minutes. Talk about 30-minute meals and Rachael Ray comes to my mind. She always does these amazing dishes on television and I wonder why she can cook them nice and easy and it looks like it's really good.

I'm just so glad Ooh and Aah enjoyed my finished product. I don't intend to be a Rachael Ray but at least my family's rock star of sorts in the kitchen. Hehe. I say more dishes to play with hopefully.

Lenlen

March 27, 2008

We knew that this day will come when she would live with her husband in the US. I know in her heart she is raring to see Alan and enjoy their overdue post-wedding time together. I am very happy for Lenlen and Alan. I pray that God will always guide them and bless them with good health and eternal happiness.

But let's backtrack a little and reminisce our day-long adventure last Saturday. We wanted to spend our last bonding moments with Lenlen in Tagaytay before she leaves.

We had a hearty buffet breakfast at Bag of Beans. Then we proceeded to the Cliffhouse.

Before heading back to Manila, we passed by Paseo Sta. Rosa and scored swimsuits from Speedo and nice tops from Sisley. All the outlets were on sale.

Never wanting to lose time, we still managed to swing by Bonifacio High Street and had snacks at Brothers Burger. This was our last stop before going home.

Perhaps the next time we would see Lenlen will be 2010 in Disneyland HK. Can't wait. Hehe. She left Manila about two hours ago. Missing you already Lenlen. We love you soooooooooo much!

Cheers Britney!

March 26, 2008

When she debuted as a recording artist, millions of fans idolized her.
I liked her in her Toxic video. Until a series of unfortunate events transpired in her private life and ruined her career. Addiction, separation , and a court trial for custody of her sons. She could sell an autobiography in minutes!

Last March 25, the comedy series How I Met Your Mother recorded the highest rating in prime time television when they aired a new episode featuring Britney Spears as a receptionist in a skin clinic where she develops a crush on a patient.

Now I give it to Britney. She is shaping up for real and cleaning up her act.

What's Eating Amy?

March 24, 2008

Grammy Award winner Amy Winehouse has been diagnosed with a skin disease recently.

Impetigo, staph infection, the works.

God bless Amy.

God Bless Africa

March 24, 2008

Academy Award Nominee Djimon Hounsou from the Blood Diamond fame is the new model for Calvin Klein's underwear campaign which was launched late last year.

Nice. God bless Africa!

This is madness...they're back!

March 24, 2008

I am greatly inspired and perfectly astounded by the phenomenon that is Grey's Anatomy. As far as I can recall, my sister introduced me to this television series in 2006. One night, as soon as my son plopped to bed, I watched its first season and it was so good thereon.

"Taking its name from a popular anatomy book, Grey's Anatomy centers around the personal lives of interns at Seattle Grace, a fictitious hospital in Washington State. High melodrama is always on the operating table as the doctors of Grey's Anatomy laugh, cry, fight and make out in-between open-heart surgeries. Engaging characters and a super-hip soundtrack make this one hospital fans can't resist checking into." (BuddyTV)

This is the one thing I've always gravitated to ever since what with our very own McDreamy and the show's wonderful world of McLabels! The characters are so real and effectual sometimes I think Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, Alex and George were my real friends.

The inimitable loveteams aptly called Merder (Meredith & Derek), Gizzie (George & Izzie), the love triangle of Addison & Alex (Addex) and Mark Sloan, and Burktina (Preston Burke and Cristina Yang) made this show a crying success. This is the Number 2 most watched show next to American Idol which is my other favorite.

An added bonus would be the fact that I've widened my knowledge in the field of music via this show. The show's musical supervisor Alexandra Patsavas is one genius in that she seriously has the ear for scoring the perfect song into every scene and highlight of an episode. In effect, every show turns out hip, modern, and cool. And this is maybe an important reason why people in their late 20s until 40s have professed their love and excitement for Grey's Anatomy.

Patsavas has also given oportunities for budding Indie artists to offer their kind of music to its followers. I myself have seemed to switch from electronica and house to anything alternative and indie nowadays. I believe indie music is one genre worth supporting and promoting.

Clearly I was delusional about the whole Hollywood writers' strike thing that happened recently. I did not want to understand what was going on with the Writers Guild of America. All I wanted was for them to not stop the shows that we all love to watch. How could they possibly stop these shows?

Now, after four months of fighting for their rights by taking it to the streets, they have finally come to (their senses?) a negotiation with the producers.

Grey's Anatomy is back! I can't wait to see new episodes of the nearly-ended season four and what happens next to the cast. Grey's Anatomy returns on April 24, 2008. Yay! Life is good.

Visita Iglesia

March 19, 2008

The custom goes back to the early Church when catholics would visit the seven great basilicas in Rome for adoration of the blessed sacrament on Holy Thursday.

The Visita Iglesia is a Filipino tradition that our family has always done ever since I was a child.

In the past, we would really struggle to walk to 14 churches representing each station of the cross. And then it became seven churches with recitation of two stations in each church.

Tomorrow it will be my first time to bring JP with me. I thought it would be nice to show my son what our family traditions look like and for him to get used to it throughout his growing years.

Usually, the churches that are always on our list are Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and the Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth and The Life.

Aside from the Philippines, the Visita Iglesia is being practiced in cities where there are many churches as diverse as Malta, Poland and Ireland.

Filipinos have brought it to places in North America that never had it before.

Blower's Daughter

March 19, 2008

I've been having the last song syndrome for the past couple of days. If you've seen the movie Closer, this is the song that plays in the end.

This is Damien Rice performing Blower's Daughter.

I just love the song so much. Depressing though but it's okay.

I Heart 5S

March 19, 2008

My friend Lyra mentioned to me that today is their cleaning day at work. I love 5S!

Apart from fancying all things and food Japanese, I admire them for coming up with this concept of organizing things and making your space conducive to working.

My workstation at USW

First let's go back a bit to what 5S means:

Seiri (ę•“ē†): Sorting. Keeping only essential items. Everything else is stored or discarded.

Seiton (ę•“é “): Simplifying. Arranging things in an order so that one can work freely.

Seisō (ęø…ęŽƒ): Sweeping or shining. This is self-explanatory.

Seiketsu (ęø…ę½”): Standardizing or systematizing cleanliness.

Shitsuke (čŗ¾): Sustaining or maintaining the cleanliness of things.

Given that knowledge, that sense of obsession compulsion has been ingrained in me ever since I was in high school. Even until now in my workstation here in the office, I am always reminded of the belief that "a clean office is a happy office".

In movies and television, good examples of a posh and clean workplace are

Miranda Priestly's office in The Devil Wears Prada,

and the Meade Publications office in Ugly Betty.

Note to self: I should've really really pursued a career in the fashion magazine industry.

Now here's one more very neat and interesting office of a famous person.

This is the office of Martha Stewart in New York.

That's why we call her the maven of good housekeeping!

World Music

March 12, 2008

I am undoubtedly a lover of world music.

In the past, I got hold of Sisters of Garbo, a compilation of songs by the female singers in Sweden. And then I fancied Antonio Carlos Jobim and anything that sounded Portuguese put me in my element.

This time I'm starting to like African music. I guess I got a tad carried away from listening to the motion picture soundtrack of Blood Diamond.

This one is called Jikele Maweni or The Retreat Song sung by Miriam Makeba.

I wonder what could be next?

Vatican's New List of Sins

March 12, 2008

I was having dinner last night when I saw this in the news.

The Vatican has released a new set of sins that are resonant to globalization and other world issues we tackle today.

The Vatican has listed drugs, pollution, genetic manipulation, and social and economic injustices as consonant to sinful behavior.

Moreover, the Catholic Church equally denounces other sinful acts such as pedophilia and abortion.

Team DiCaprio

March 11, 2008

He is amazing in his craft. His movies have greatly inspired the human psyche by the challenging and relevant roles he plays.

He was a drifter and artist in Titanic, a con artist in Catch Me If You Can, a young undercover cop in The Departed, and a mercenary turned smuggler in Blood Diamond.

And now this.

Leonardo DiCaprio has made a step further in taking on a different challenge, a call for saving our planet, just as Al Gore has brought us to our senses in battling global warming as seen in An Inconvenient Truth.

More than a producer and narrator of The Eleventh Hour, Leonardo DiCaprio is now an environmental warrior.

Zeroed

March 7, 2008

So it hit me and I'm officially zeroed! Coke Zero was launched a month ago and I can say it still has the same kick as the regular Coke but without the calories. I'm saying I love the taste.

Thanks to hubby for the nice shirt, but I'd rather have the one with the grey dynamic ribbon on the side. Hehe.

American Idol Fever

March 7, 2008

My friends know for a fact that even before motherhood struck me, I was a chanteuse! Apparently a frustrated one. Hehe. I joined singing competitions in San Miguel where I was lucky enough to be a grand finalist for two consecutive years. I sang songs of Barbra Streisand and Gladys Knight and the Pips.

I also remember the time when I auditioned to sing in Hyatt many years ago with the piano accompaniment of the late Tito Rudy. That audition night was one of the best moments of my life, me on stage singing with passion and entertaining people who equally share my love for music.

So whenever I watch American Idol, I tend to focus on every aspect of the contestants' performances. My mentor in Hyatt taught me how best to project to the audience, exude confidence in what you are singing, and as Simon Cowell always puts it, choose the right songs.

Tonight the 16 contenders will be trimmed down to the final 12 of the season 7 competition. I find some contestants to be interesting like Carly Smithson, David Cook, Chikezie, Amanda Overmyer, Brooke White, and David Archuleta.

I hope my bets get to the final 12 tonight!

Mineral Make-Up

March 7, 2008

Henri Calayag, a veteran in the field of beauty, recently opened his salon at The Residences in Greenbelt across Renaissance Hotel. He is also the first local manufacturer of the latest make-up today that he named Mineral Wonders.

My officemate and I strolled around Greenbelt 5 yesterday and went to Myth to check out the make-up products.

Although a concealer was not part of the make-up line, we saw dusting powders in tulle, beige and pink shades, a mud bronzer and a blood lip tint. You can buy a starter kit that comes with a kabuki brush for about PhP1500. Says the sales expert, the make-up finish is shimmery but natural.

Mineral Wonders by Henri Calayag are available at Henri Calayag Salon Greenbelt (Tel. Nos. 7295888/09209181880) and Myth Greenbelt 5 (Tel. Nos. 7570162/09159137057)

Conflict Diamonds

March 3, 2008

The movie Blood Diamond is a story about conflict diamonds set in Sierra Leone. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a white African mercenary turned smuggler in search of a pink diamond, Djimon Hounsou plays a fisherman who found the pink diamond and will use it to retrieve his family and son who became a child soldier, and Jennifer Connelly plays an idealistic American journalist. All three major characters portray pivotal roles in search of truth and freedom.

I liked the movie very much for the simple fact that it intrigued me on the story of a precious stone that we proudly show off to our friends, that same rock that has claimed thousands of lives in blood and utmost danger. It made me curious enough to know why there are child soldiers in Angola, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in the 1990s.

"Conflict diamonds are diamonds that originate from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments. These diamonds are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments."

Just like what it showed at the end of the movie, Sierra Leone is now at peace.

The movie Blood Diamond, based on a book written by Greg Campbell, was directed by Ed Zwick (Last Samurai). Of course, the musical score was superbly done by James Newton Howard.

The Usual

February 27, 2008

This is how my usual noon habit looks like. I am just so glad that Bun on the Run is back after years and years of disappearance! The branches I know are in TriNoma, Metrowalk, BF Homes ParaƱaque, and Ayala across PBCom.

Best Dressed at the Oscars

February 27, 2008

My bets for the best dressed at the recent Oscars would have to be Jennifer Garner, Heidi Klum, Hillary Swank, and Jessica Alba, in no particular order though.

Jennifer Garner wore a black silk taffeta Oscar de la Renta fishtail gown.

Hillary Swank wore a clinging black Atelier Versace number.

Heidi Klum wore a dramatic red silk taffeta John Galliano stunner.

Jessica Alba wore a Marchesa gown in deep purple which I love.

Night of the Europeans

February 27, 2008

Jon Stewart was witty. I liked his introductory monologue very much.

It was a night of European actors who were the recipients of the major awards:

Performance by An Actor in a Leading Role - Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

Performance by An Actor in a Supporting Role - Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men

Performance by An Actress in a Leading Role - Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose

Performance by An Actress in a Supporting Role - Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton

Achievement in Directing - Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men

Best Motion Picture of the Year - No Country for Old Men

I have yet to see Juno because Diablo Cody won the Original Screenplay award.

10 Minutes of Wisdom

February 22, 2008

My director friend forwarded a video of Dr. Randy Pausch, a professor in Carnegie Mellon University, who is terminally ill from pancreatic cancer. The video is a clip from the Oprah show and is now being published as a book to be released this April.

Now why do I get the feeling that while fighting the cancer, he turned out and spoke about living instead of leaving his last words to family and colleagues?

Like Dr. Pausch said in his blogsite, he is hardly unique. He adds, "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."

What a truly optimistic fellow.

Lost in Migration

February 22, 2008

I am currently in the tedious process of transferring my sound files on to my new HP Compaq notebook. About 400 MP3s are to be migrated, carrying all music genres that I appreciate.

Another version of iTunes has been released with which I have to sync my iPod, add to that the Opera browser set-up file that I have to download to the laptop. Opera is the one browser I found comfortable and so easy to use especially with its multiple tabs function.

Last month I applied for a plug-in broadband connection which is the newest product of Smart Communications. I finally got the device the other day and tested it with my pc. It works just fine, except the connection strength is dependent on the signal it receives from Smart. Maybe in next few amounts, I will want to have my pc memory increased too. Ergo, transfer, download, set-up, and synchronize.

Glam Day

February 20, 2008

Lucky me. February 25 is declared a national holiday so I get to watch the Academy Awards live. As in the past years, I take the day off and see to it that I catch the Oscars. Why? Simply because I love watching the actors dress up, get grilled about what and who they're wearing and I guess it's simply enchanting to see the ladies all in glittery, elegant gowns sashaying down the red carpet.

The film industry in America is such an honorable industry, dedicated to redefining their craft year after year and making films that tackle plots of substance. At the Oscars, every bit player is recognized, from the screenwriter where the story begins, the editor, sound engineer, cinematographer, director and the cast.

Hosting the 80th Academy Awards is Jon Stewart. I expected it to be Ellen Degeneres, she did such a wonderful hosting job last year, playing with Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese on the side.

Anyway, with the writer's strike over, there will be lots of catching up to do with pending movies and television series. In the meantime, I'll be actorspotting at the Oscars where fame, talent and glamour converge!
