Visita Iglesia

March 19, 2008

The custom goes back to the early Church when catholics would visit the seven great basilicas in Rome for adoration of the blessed sacrament on Holy Thursday.

The Visita Iglesia is a Filipino tradition that our family has always done ever since I was a child.

In the past, we would really struggle to walk to 14 churches representing each station of the cross. And then it became seven churches with recitation of two stations in each church.

Tomorrow it will be my first time to bring JP with me. I thought it would be nice to show my son what our family traditions look like and for him to get used to it throughout his growing years.

Usually, the churches that are always on our list are Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and the Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth and The Life.

Aside from the Philippines, the Visita Iglesia is being practiced in cities where there are many churches as diverse as Malta, Poland and Ireland.

Filipinos have brought it to places in North America that never had it before.
