Love, Love, Love

What can I say, the movie CARRIEd me away in its truest form.

Back from its television series, the film's exposition presents with a montage of past events for each of the characters, showing them again on the screen but giving the chicks snippets from the finale of its last season. This was done so as to direct the audience from where it left off to the present. And how it was done was quick but simply flawless...to the tune of Fergie's Labels or Love.

Seeing the trailer a while back, one would think that the wedding of Carrie and Big would be the dénouement, rather it was the rising action of the story.  The writers perhaps thought it best to bring such a hard conflict on the script and that they would think of something more fabulous in the end.  The kind of acting that the girls put out there never changed from how they were years ago.  It is the same foxy and sexy Samantha Jones, the fierce and charming Charlotte York, the spunky and ferocious Miranda Hobbes, and of course it is the same old passionate and fashionable Carrie Bradshaw we loved then but love a hundred times more now.

In the movie you may have found colorful prints, beautiful flowers, pink mobile phones, flowing white gowns by Chanel, Lanvin, Vera Wang and Vivienne Westwood, blue bird feathers, tons of jewelry, studded black belts, boot sandals, long and big pearl necklaces, rental bags, bottles and bottles of wine, runway-size closets, penthouse apartments, Manolo Blahniks, Pradas, Versaces, and Louis Vuittons.  However, only one label goes beyond Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha, and their friendship that has bound them through the years from their 20s, 30s, 40s and up till they turn golden girls.  That label is LOVE. Every time.  All the time.  The last song till the credits may have said it all, as Jennifer Hudson sings All Dressed Up In Love.  "We wear what we want to feel, we're all dressed up in love."  After all, what we need is love, right?

As far as Carrie's and Big's relationship is concerned, we know they have been dating for 10 years. We remember Big rescuing Carrie from Paris and that's how we saw them till the curtains rolled down on us in its finale. So it comes as an astounding news for Charlotte to jump for utter joy when she finds out Carrie and Big are getting married! Although this may not be the feeling we get from Big, or should we say John now that we know his real name is John James Preston, because as he says he's done this twice now and unsure that this is really what he and Carrie needs to forever seal their relationship. That scene in the middle of the street where Big and Carrie get off their cars was emotional you can feel that it was rough on both of them. But now we know how the resolution comes surprisingly sweet and how Carrie and Big lived happily ever after. In the end, Carrie wore what she felt, she was dressed in a plain white dress with no label. She wore love in its pure extravagance, accessorized by her beloved friends. Ah, we could only hope for a sequel.

To motion picture soundtrack followers, the compilation includes Jem, Bliss, Kaskade, India Arie, among others mentioned. A new version of the inimitable theme of the movie was done by The Pfeifer Broz. Orchestra.

And to fanatics of chick flicks, this is the movie of the decade! After all is said and done anyway, everybody needs the cheese in life, everybody needs love, love, love.

Sex And The City The Movie stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Chris Noth. Directed by Michael Patrick King, created by Darren Star and produced by HBO. Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity and language.

This review also appears in IMDb.

London

If there ever was a reason for me to see this movie, it would be that it was shot almost entirely in London. Plus the director is good.

Filipino movies are getting better now mainly because of beautiful cinematography what with the places around the world such as Italy, Dubai, Japan, USA, and many other countries that make the scenes fresh and exciting to watch.

I have an auntie who moved to Middlesex, England when she was still single. She married there and bore a son, my cousin Steven. Every December, they come home for a month-long Christmas vacation. London to me becomes synonymous to Tita Baby and Steven, and haplessly trying to carry the British accent has always been my comic tool with friends. The movie Caregiver is a fitting tribute to industrious women like my auntie. She is a veteran in her field and never ceases to be a good daughter and sister to her family in the Philippines. I applaud her for being the good mother that she is and a living example of a strong-willed independent woman of our time.

Hopefully, the movie shows these wonderful sights of England.

George Michael

His entrance was so, so grand. He has been away from the limelight for 17 years. And for his comeback, he appeared on television via the finale of American Idol Season 7.

From his entrance to his performance, Paula Abdul danced, cried, and cheered him on constantly. Just like Mariah Carey's Fly Like A Bird, the words of this song give a pinch to our hearts as we reflect on the lives of our less fortunate brothers and sisters all around the world.

The George Michael sings Praying For Time.

Latest Glossies

These are the glossies I love reading because they are the real authority when it comes to their respective fields: Vogue for fierce, fabulous fashion; and People for entertainment.

Blige, Whitney Port, Audrina Patridge, Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, Norah Jones, Carrie Underwood, Kate Beckinsale, Joy Bryant, Josh Groban, Christina Applegate, Sarah Silverman, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Depp, Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, George Clooney, Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Caroline Kennedy, Pattie Boyd, Lisa Bonet, Vanessa Marcil, Marisol Thomas, Delilah Dicrescenzo, Kim Porter, Paula Patton, Guy Ritchie, Rumer Willis, Sarah Larson, Amanda Beard, Anna Friel, Jason Taylor, The Cast of Gossip Girl, Tina Fey, Vanessa Williams, Mariska Hargitay, Marcia Cross, Isla Fischer, Amy Adams, Christina Hendricks, Julianne Moore, Lauren Ambrose, David Beckham, Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah, Rihanna, Salma Hayek, Patrick Dempsey, Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz, Eva Longoria Parker & Tony Parker, Jessica Alba & Cash Warren, Rachael Ray, Ingrid Hoffman, Sandra Lee, Angie Harmon, Carrie Ann Inaba, Raquel Welch, and Iman.

Meanwhile in the June issue of Vogue, a number of spreads were featured as a publicity tool for the upcoming Sex and The City The Movie. Photographed by the famous Annie Leibovitz, Carrie and Big sashay down the historic places in New York and pose for the most exciting chick flick of the decade!

p.s. In preparation for SATC The Movie, I had to watch how it ended in the television series. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha are back! The movie is showing in two days!

Apologize

One Republic has done a good job in their hit song entitled Apologize.

And I am loving their song!

Grey's Anatomy, House, Ugly Betty: Season Finales

They are the "things" my eyes feasted on last week. All enjoyable to watch I must say.

Season 4 of Grey's Anatomy ended with Derek and Meredith getting back together. Although that last part was kind of a cliffhanger. Derek asks Meredith to wait for him, so he can finish what he started with Nurse Rose. This gives us the packed excitement to watch them through the 5th season. I am so happy with old couples getting back together, Richard going home once more to Adele, and Alex, oh poor Alex, pleading for comfort from Izzie. They were a hot couple once anyway. Another hot couple perhaps would be Erica and Callie. Would you say that George has a thing for Lexie, or it is the other way around? The writers at Grey's always know when to make their episodes sappy and with lots of cheese. And mostly they know that they always have to do it in their season finale!

With House, the season 4 finale is one heartbreaking thing to see. The series is never known for making people cry, but this time they tried a new formula and it worked. Wilson's acting was excellent, what with losing Amber and being shattered by House's indifference. But in the way I saw the ending, it was actually House who saved his best friend. He risked his life to try to revive Amber, and I am sure this was the first time House was ever emotional with a medical case he handled, because he loves his best friend and will do anything his best friend asks him to do. The ending shots were representative of the fact that life goes on, and that tragic day in the lives of Wilson, Amber and House is just another mundane day at Princeton Plainsborough Hospital.

Ugly Betty is like the coffee beans in between sniffing perfumes. It is my neutralizer, that thing which puts me in the middle of watching cheesy-dramatic Grey's and intense-acerbic House. This fashion television series has reached the finale of their second season. What happened in their last episode resembled a tug-of-war for Betty Suarez as she was caught in between saying yes to marriage with Henry and going with Gio to their first date in Rome. Betty should answer her best in the third season!

David Cook, The Winner

I know I have been remiss in my blogging duties but there were so many things my eyes feasted on last week. Let's get the ball rolling on my overdue posts.

I told you so. David Cook indeed is the 7th American Idol. In the words of Simon Cowell, he was phenomenal. Undoubtedly from the beginning of the season, we knew he was going to be at the face-off round. The win was an astounding 12 million votes over David Archuleta. Very, very well done!

Last night the finalists all appeared on Larry King Live over at CNN. They are scheduled to go on tour this July in 50 cities.

Here are the shots I took while watching the interview.

Monday Mishmash

Head to Head
It will be a battle of the Davids. David Cook and David Archuleta face each other for the Season 7 finale of American Idol. Cook is the rock star of the house, while Archuleta is the resident crooner. Either one is deserving, so it will be a delightful thing to see this week.

Finally
Ellen Degeneres has announced in her show last week that she is getting married to Portia De Rossi of the Ally McBeal fame. According to the news, the California Supreme Court has granted rights to same gender marriages. And as I am a disciple of Team Ellen, I am very happy for the couple. Best wishes to the humdingers!

Season 4 Ends
Award-winning medical drama series Grey's Anatomy gears up this week for their two-hour finale entitled "Freedom". Technically, this will be the 16th and 17th episodes of the fourth season. Many cliffhangers deserve answers in the finale. What will Meredith and Derek arrive at, will Izzie and Alex rekindle their old flame, and what awaits Cristina, George, Lexie and the others? I'll surely lean on my television screen, as Shonda Rhimes says so.  For more scoop on the hit show, go to this site.

Me, A Shophag
Yesterday Ron and I took Uno to Greenhills for some bonding time. The little one enjoyed shopping for his toy and a pair of rubber shoes at Converse. It's our early gift for his 3rd birthday anyway! Of course, I picked the style and color of his Chuck Taylor kickers.  From Greenhills, we hied off to Glorietta for my turn to be a baghag once again!  Luckily, I scored a glossy blackish bag from Figliarina accented by silver chain link handles.  Thanks hubby, my dear benefactor.

Also available is a new scent called Aqua Lily available in EDT, body spray, shower gel and perfume oil.

War, Inc.

War, Inc. is the latest offering of John Cusack as actor, co-writer, and co-producer. It is actually an absurd political satire set in an imaginary place called Turaqistan. A former vice president of the United States (Dan Aykroyd) hires Brand Hauser (John Cusack) as a mercenary or a hit man for a war profiteering company. Moreover, the film is futuristic in nature and the main characters tend to carry as much acerbic wit as possible in the scenes.

It felt strange watching the entire film and this may not be the typical politics-oriented film you can expect. As usual but prolific as ever, John Cusack portrayed his intelligence and knack for some action scenes without stuntmen.

The movie also stars Ben Kingsley as Walken, Joan Cusack as Hauser's assistant Marsha Dillon, Marisa Tomei as the reporter Natalie Hegalhuzen, and Hilary Duff as the interesting Yonica Babyyeah who turns out to be Hauser's long lost child.

Political satire at its finest, I think War, Inc. deserves to be in the league of the experimental films which can either surprise or bore an ordinary audience. My take on this film is simple as I was fortunately trained under the liberal arts.  It is a strange movie to me but it does bring out the main platform of the story.

War, Inc. is rated R for violence, language, and brief sexual material.

Fly Like A Bird

Inspired by Mariah Carey's own composition, Fly Like A Bird, I sat down and decided I would make my own interpretation of how I see the world today. The global issues we are tackling now are extremely pressing concerns and that only a single word answers this: LOVE. Our love for God first and foremost, and our love for peace and humanity.

Natural disasters have all come and go around the world, such as the tempestuous tsunamis in Asia, the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans in America, the recent cyclone in Myanmar and earthquake in China. The increasing effects of global warming are slowly dragging us into the darker future pit, unless we unite together and do something to combat this phenomenon.

Meanwhile, man-made conflicts, are as as destructive as force majeur. The bombing of the World Trade Center is just one of the most painful tragedies we have ever gone through. The current wars in the middle east speak of even more futility amidst peace talks happening all over the world. The rising prices of food, water, electricity, and other necessities are pulling families down into the economic drain day by day. More than what the United Nations and World Wide Fund for Nature, since time immemorial, have been established for, I believe that the love for our own people must really begin with us now. And there is no time to wait anymore. Attaining world peace is truly paramount of all our priorities as children of God. The absence of poverty, malnutrition, danger zones, illiteracy, among others, is what we should all pray for. In the same manner we should be thankful for our blessings, whether big or minute, and be grateful for the presence of little happy moments in our lives.

Having said that, and as a Catholic, we should keep our faith in the Lord and that whatever may happen to us His children, we are safe in His love. I chose this song to direct the photos I picked because flying like a bird connotes peace and independence from harm. We are all birds in the Lord's paradise, so to speak, and we are able to face our fears because we are lifted by our faith in Him, so much so we pray that He carries us higher in His unconditional love for us.

This morning I compiled the most striking photos I could find. And this is the only way I could best put it out as my way of expressing the grief and hope we all carry within us today. The words of this song are powerful and I have included them for clarity and reference.

Da da da da da da
da da da da da da da da dooo
[Priest]
Weeping may endure for a night,
but joy comes in the morning
Trust him.

Somehow I know that
There's a place up above
With no more hurt and struggling
Free of all atrocities and suffering
Because I feel the unconditional love
From one who cares enough for me
To erase all my burdens
And let me be free to

[chorus]
Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need you now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of you by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray you'll come and carry me home

Can we recover
Will the world ever be
A place of peace and harmony
With no war and with no brutality
If we loved each other
We would find victory
But in this harsh reality
Sometimes I'm so despondent
That I feel the need to

[chorus]
Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need You now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home

Da da da da da da
da da da da da da da da dooo

[Priest]
He says he will never forsake you
Or leave you alone
Trust him

I need You right here right now Lord
I need You right here by my side
Keep your head to the sky
With God's love you'll survive

Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need you now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side

Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home
Carry me higher, higher, higher
Carry me higher, higher, higher
Carry me home
Higher Jesus
Carry me higher Lord

I need my silver shoes

Next month, two dear friends of mine are marching down the aisle.

I just need to blurt it now that I need silver shoes for the weddings!
Everything else is ready except a pair of shiny, sparkly kickers.

You like this one?

Or this?

Or this one?

The simplest but sexiest I found was this.

Skin Health: On Vitamins ACE and Aging

I have started taking in a new multivitamin + mineral capsule called Conzace. My sister's dermatologist prescribed this vitamin to her but I decided to take it too and note any changes if ever. It is a green, soft gel capsule that should be taken with food.

The components of Conzace are 5,000 IU of Retinol Palmitate or Vitamin A, 100 IU of dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate or Vitamin E, 500 mg of Ascorbic Acid, and 25 mg of Zinc (as Sulfate Monohydrate). IU stands for international unit, used to measure vitamins A, D and E. Vitamins A, C, E are antioxidants essential for boosting the immune system and limiting the harm done by free radicals, thus making skin healthy and glowing. At least, that's what we all hope our skin would turn out to be even when our necks begin to sag.

Now if you are ever wondering what type of products to use according to your age, here are some pointers I gathered:

If you are in your 20s, you should prevent fine lines and wrinkles early. Using a sunscreen with SPF 15 is a good start. Smoking is also one factor that can clog the pores of the skin, so quit if possible.

If you are in your 30s, using a facial moisturizer, sunscreen, and firming lotion is necessary.

If you are in your 40s and over, it is important to use an anti-aging cream that targets specific problems like fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and freckles.

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock. Do we want the time to run out of us? Off we go to salvage our skin then. After all, we might be chuffed to bits, as the Brits would say, as we look youthful and rosy.

Part One: Bride of the Year

I first met her during my orientation at the Pavilion. She wore black-rimmed glasses, as preppy as Winona Ryder can be. And as we would later tease her, she looked like Ashley Judd with her wavy bob and warm, friendly grin. But neither Ashley nor Winona could ever resemble the person within.

In all her single years, she waited, unbroken, resilient, and hopeful. She was always the helpful sister, that caring shoulder, the pillow catching my brimful of tears.

And now that special time has come. She has truly found her true love's kiss. Her forever, her hope.

This is a prelude of my tribute to our bride of the year.

Our best wishes, Yazzie. c",)

Inexpensive Thrills

I was asked about the cheaper forms of entertainment nowadays. My comment appeared in Inquirer last Saturday.

More than the Magic Sing though, I treat myself by watching a big movie that is showing, and by big I mean good stars, good director, good story, and of course the appeal it draws from the masses measured by their excitement to see the movie on its first day.

My other secondary suggestions would have been what the others have already answered: surfing the net, catching cool videos on YouTube, staying at home and experimenting in the kitchen, and relaxing to the songs in my music player.

However, nothing beats being entertained by the toddler in the house. And that's always, sky's the limit.

Leona Lewis

I can't believe my husband was playing this in the car yesterday. I've been forgetting to get this song in my music player.

Nonetheless, I now profess my insanity to this cut of Leona Lewis. It is interesting to note that Leona Lewis is a discovery of the wise Simon Cowell. The mentor found Leona in the third series of The X Factor UK in 2006.

"Bleeding Love", the second single in her album Spirit, was the biggest-selling single of 2007 in the United Kingdom, and number one in the US on April 5, 2008.

Here's Bleeding Love, plus the lyrics.

Closed off from love
I didn’t need the pain
Once or twice was enough
And it was all in vain
Time starts to pass
Before you know it you’re frozen

But something happened
For the very first time with you
My heart melts into the ground
Found something true
And everyone’s looking round
Thinking I’m going crazy

But I don’t care what they say
I’m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
My heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open

Trying hard not to hear
But they talk so loud
Their piercing sounds fill my ears
Try to fill me with doubt
Yet I know that the goal
Is to keep me from falling

But nothing’s greater
Than the rush that comes with your embrace
And in this world of loneliness
I see your face
Yet everyone around me
Thinks that I’m going crazy, maybe, maybe

But I don’t care what they say

I’m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
My heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I....

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open

And it’s draining all of me
Oh they find it hard to believe
I’ll be wearing these scars
For everyone to see

I don’t care what they say
I’m in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don’t know the truth
My heart’s crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I....

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I....

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

Generation I for Indie

There are independent films that I have been wanting to see in the last couple of months. These are Kubrador and Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, to name a few. Filipino independent films have successfully penetrated the industry of film, harvesting awards from foreign-hosted festivals.

Not too long ago, ICU Bed #7 was the first independent film I saw that courageously showed what a digitally-mastered indie movie should look like. ICU Bed #7 was an official entry in Cinemalaya, and its writer and director Rica Arevalo won the award for Best Director.

This time, Rica Arevalo embarks on a new short film entitled Gusto Kita Too which will have a back to back screening with fellow indie film maker Will Fredo's Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa on May 21, 2008 at Robinsons Galleria.

Here's the official press release of Gusto Kita Too:

From the makers of award-winning indie hits, "ICU Bed #7" and "Saan Nagtatago si Happiness?", comes a new short film from Cinemalaya best director Rica Arevalo entitled, "Gusto Kita Too". Shot in the USA, this romantic comedy casts Fil-Am talents Brian Reyes and Casey Pascual as they pursue true love in this funny Pinoy style courtship. Produced by Mediarevolution Film Productions with Maan dela Cruz as editor and original music by Jerrold Tarog.

"Gusto Kita Too" is an added attraction, screening back to back with Will Fredo's sensational film, "Sa Pagdapo ng Mariposa" at IndieSine Robinson's Galleria starting May 21, 2008.

If you want to go to the moon....

I know this is an old one, however, Serendipity is my best-loved romantic movie of all time. Saying this without superficiality, every aspect of the film is naturally commendable.

Actors. How could one not love John Cusack? As in all of his movies, he was so passionate as Jonathan Trager. Kate Beckinsale (as Sara Thomas) played her part well as the one who started the belief thing and all, influencing Jonathan that if things were meant to be, then it will be all the good work of fate and it will happen. Jeremy Piven plays the role of Dean Kansky, the best friend of Jonathan.

Screenplay. Dean Kansky turned out to be the wisdom-sayer in the end. His written eulogy struck me the most.

Here's the climax part which leads to Jonathan reading his obituary.

"Jonathan Trager, prominent television producer for ESPN, died last night from complications of losing his soulmate and his fiancé. He was 35 years old and soft-spoken and obsessive. Trager never looked the part of a hopeless romantic. But, in the final days of his life, he revealed an unknown side of his psyche. This hidden quasi-Jungian persona surfaced during the Agatha Christie-life pursuit for his long-reputed soulmate, a woman whom he only spent a few precious hours with. Sadly, the protracted search ended late Saturday night in complete and utter failure. Yet even in certain defeat, the courageous Trager secretly clung to the belief that life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences uh-uh, but rather it is a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite sublime plan. Asked about the loss of his dear friend, Dean Kansky, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and executive editor of New York Times, described Jonathan as a changed man in the last days of his life. Things were clearer for him, Kansky noted. Ultimately Jonathan concluded that if we are to live life in harmony with the universe we must all possess a powerful faith in what the ancients used to call `fatum', what we currently refer to as destiny."

Music. The songs were brilliantly picked by the music supervisor of the movie. The soundtrack includes Northern Sky (Nick Drake), Waiting in Vain (Annie Lennox), January Rain (David Gray), Moonlight Kiss (Bap Kennedy), When You Know (Shawn Colvin), among others.

My favorite part. The ending is definitely the loveliest part. Otherwise, how else could having been reunited and thanking the heavens for a fortunate accident be less exciting?

Here's that last part of Serendipity. Notice the songs playing in the background: January Rain by David Gray, followed by Northern Sky by Nick Drake. Beautiful songs.

p.s. There's one more line I loved that Dean Kansky said to his friend Jonathan before handing the obituary. Dean said: "You know, the Greeks didn't write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man died: Did he have passion?"

Watching this movie over and over is like going to the moon and back. It feels surreal and magical especially when one has got passion.

Street Kings

I also watched the latest Keanu Reeves movie yesterday. Street Kings has a power cast including Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans and Jay Mohr.

This gangster movie packed with explicit language is the story of Tom Ludlow (Reeves), a police detective caught in the middle of a fellow police officer's murder and his loyalty to Captain Jack Wander (Whitaker). His aim to catch the suspects and how he connects the dots to get to the mastermind make up for the development of the story.

Hugh Laurie (who plays Capt. James Biggs) has once again displayed his bitter-tasting wit in its most effectual sense. At first you would think he is the real villain so wait till you see the evolution of his character. This is why I love watching House M.D.!

Street Kings is directed by David Ayer. Rated R for strong violence and pervasive language.

Cuatro Minutos

Aren't you feeling this yet? Ellen Degeneres has been dancing to it lately.

It will really just take you 4 minutes to love this song.

Golden girl Madonna kicks back with her new song.

And Justin, just rockin' it!

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style

I took the day off yesterday due to my yet unconfirmed positional vertigo (a.k.a. dizziness). And so I channelled couch potato the whole day.

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style was on ETC so off I went to watching it. This is another reality show that aims to answer the fashion emergencies of ordinary people in America.

Nicole Appelman, 29, is a mother of two boys, and a school teacher. Tim Gunn and his assistant Veronica Webb helped Nicole to bring her to a fashion epiphany. They did this by first making a list of all the fashion staples according to her age and lifestyle, and then submitting her to the fashion and personality development guru Laura Bennett and lastly, bringing her to famous designer Douglas Hannant.

I felt for Nicole and her struggle to boost her self-esteem and be the fashionable person she once were. In fact, Laura Bennett made Nicole list down the things she would like to do but feels guilty doing because of her responsibilities as a mom.

Concluding the episode was a fashion show of Nicole donning her new wardrobe and surprise gifts from Tim Gunn and Laura Bennett with the presence of Nicole's loved ones on the mini runway show.

Now here's my take-away from the show. I know that a woman has to carry at least these essentials or must-haves in her wardrobe and so I took down some pointers from Tim Gunn.

Clockwise from the top: a good pair of jeans to wear even on dinner dates, this is the style of dress I absolutely love: a Diane von Furstenberg basic black wrap dress, the crisp white shirt of course, a stunning red (or any other solid color) cocktail dress, and a plain cardigan to add a little texture to the shirts.

The more plain and basic it is, the better. Yes, less is more indeed.

The 5 Things I Used To Be

1. .....a Desktop Publisher & Graphic Designer.
My first employer was a marketing services company that does non-traditional advertising such as lighted sign boxes, mobile ads, public relations kits, and computer graphics presentations. These were the primary products of the company. I remember making a set of trainer and trainee manuals for our client Leader Price-Franprix, a supermarket chain based in France owned by the late Reginald Lewis. Lewis' Filipina wife Loida assumed ownership and management of TLC Beatrice Holdings, the largest African American company in the United States. Executing and designing the manuals in the training package was a major achievement in my four-year stint.

2. .....a grand finalist for two consecutive years in a company-wide singing competition.
This was truly the height of my yuppie years. After emerging as a weekly finalist one Friday night, I was a bit shocked to see our company officers grace the event. They invited me together with my friends to head to another company gathering nearby. Our company president harangued me into belting out my song entry in front of an equally big crowd.

3. .....a swimming medalist in this same company.
In 1998, a mini-olympics was held and I bested my colleagues in a swim and sink event. Two medals are in my "nostalgia box" as we speak and if there was anyone who would ask me what my favorite sport is, I would have to always answer that with "just swimming, only swimming".

4. .....a Human Resources Manager three years ago.
I would like to think that I did not have a hard time carrying out this responsibility because for one, I love interacting and being with people. My boss perhaps saw that extrovertive quality in me. Hence, the people-oriented position.

5. .....a measely 115 pounds of svelte outline and grace.
Lizza and I were regulars on the dance floor when it came to company shows. In fact, we were the Uptown Girls sashaying the ramp in a bon voyage party held last 2001. I was acclaimed as the Janet Jackson of the company, and was actually awarded best dressed as an Afro-American icon! Ho-hum, those were really the days.

The Iron Becomes Gold

So clearly I'm still in a state of awe. Tony Stark had me in his "the truth is...I am Iron Man" ending catch line.

I just could not get over Robert Downey Jr.!

As of this writing, the movie has gone from super iron to rock star gold scoring a monumental $201 million in its worldwide debut. A non-sequel flick, it has been acclaimed by critics as the best reviewed superhero movie of 2008.

Iron Man is the first release of Marvel Studios.

Iron Man, Oh Iron Man...

My sister and I trooped to GB3 yesterday and came rushing to buy the tickets. Last week, she turned to me very eager to watch this movie. All it took to make me go with her? Yes, Robert Downey, Jr.. I never knew Iron Man until yesterday.

Tony Stark, sole heir of Stark Industries, maximizes his technology prowess and assembles an armored suit after an incident that nearly killed him.

There could be no other actor who can better play the role of Iron Man than Downey. His acting is effective to the extreme as he portrayed a rugged genius who develops a superhuman ability to fly and fight his opponents.

The movie is a current blockbuster at the tills, so I won't give away the synopsis further lest I feed you with the spoilers. Let me just say I enjoyed the movie very much and the comeback of both Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow (who plays Pepper Potts) on screen is such a refreshing welcome to the moviegoers.

Directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man also stars Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane, Terence Howard as James Rhodes, Shaun Toub as Yinsen, and Faran Tahir as Raza.

This movie really gives a big bang for your buck!

That Article of Long Ago

As remembered by my friends last Friday over a sumptuous dinner at Murphy's, here's that article I wrote during the month of hearts of the year 2002.

This published work appeared in the Just For Kicks section of Manila Bulletin. A friend asked me if she could hand it to her editor-friend over at the newspaper publisher and I obliged.
